West Trunk Sanitary
Sewer Rehabilitation
The West Trunk Sanitary Sewer Rehabilitation is one of the largest and most complex trenchless engineering undertakings in North American history. Serving Peel Region’s rapidly growing population, this critical wastewater lifeline required a complete structural restoration to combat severe biogenic hydrogen-sulfide gas corrosion. As the specialty rehabilitation contractor, Tarpon Contracting successfully executed the internal structural wrapping of this massive asset, restoring its structural integrity and extending its operational lifespan by decades without surface disruption.

Herridge Feeder Main CFRP Rehabilitation
The Herridge Feeder Main, owned and operated by the Region of Peel, is a critical component of the Region’s water transmission infrastructure. Extending approximately 6 kilometres, the feeder main required significant rehabilitation after remaining inactive for two years and experiencing deterioration. The project became Canada’s largest Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) rehabilitation project, requiring a specialized approach capable of renewing the existing pipeline while minimizing the need for conventional excavation and replacement. Tarpon Contracting contributed to the rehabilitation using CFRP renewal systems and trenchless techniques, helping restore the feeder main to full operational service.
Client: Region of Peel
Project Timeline: 2014 to 2016
Project Specifications:
-
Location: Region of Peel, Ontario
-
Asset Type: Municipal Water Feeder Main
-
Asset Length: Approximately 6 km
-
Core Issue: Pipeline deterioration following two years of inactivity.
-
Methodology: Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) Renewal & Trenchless Rehabilitation.
Tarpon Contracting’s Core Contributions:
Rehabilitating a large-diameter municipal feeder main across approximately six kilometres required specialized materials, careful execution, and an approach designed to extend the service life of the existing infrastructure. Tarpon Contracting’s work included:
-
CFRP Structural Rehabilitation: Advanced Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) systems were installed throughout the feeder main to restore structural integrity and reinforce deteriorated sections of the pipeline. The application of high-strength composite materials provided a durable, long-term rehabilitation solution while preserving the existing asset and extending its service life.
-
Trenchless Pipeline Renewal: Trenchless rehabilitation techniques allowed critical repairs and renewal work to be completed with minimal surface disruption, significantly reducing the need for excavation along the approximately six-kilometre feeder main alignment.
-
Pipeline Watermain Restoration: Following rehabilitation activities, the feeder main underwent restoration and commissioning procedures to prepare the asset for service. These efforts supported the successful return of a critical component of the Region of Peel's water transmission network to full operation.
-
Disinfection, Sampling & Return to Service: Following completion of the rehabilitation, the feeder main underwent a comprehensive disinfection process using NSF/ANSI 61-certified chlorine to eliminate any potential bacteriological contaminants before being returned to service. After disinfection, bacteriological samples were collected at regulated intervals throughout the pipeline and submitted to an accredited laboratory for analysis. Once test results confirmed compliance with drinking water quality requirements, the feeder main was safely returned to operation
Regional Significance & Impact:
The successful rehabilitation of the Herridge Feeder Main demonstrated how advanced composite materials and trenchless construction techniques can be used to renew major municipal infrastructure without relying on complete pipeline replacement. The project delivered several important outcomes:
-
Setting a Canadian Benchmark: As Canada’s largest CFRP project, the Herridge Feeder Main rehabilitation represents a significant application of composite renewal technology within Canadian municipal infrastructure.
-
Restoring Critical Infrastructure: The rehabilitation returned the Herridge Feeder Main to full operation after two years of inactivity, restoring the asset to the Region of Peel’s water transmission system.
-
Extending Existing Asset Life: CFRP rehabilitation provided a means of renewing and strengthening the existing feeder main, allowing the Region to preserve valuable infrastructure rather than undertake complete replacement.
-
Reducing Excavation Requirements: The use of trenchless techniques minimized the amount of conventional excavation required for a rehabilitation project spanning approximately six kilometres.
-
Supporting Long-Term Water Reliability: Returning the feeder main to service strengthened the Region of Peel’s water infrastructure and helped support the continued reliable operation of its municipal water network.
